About Catalina

I Love Talking About Sex …and Relationships

Hi, I’m Catalina Lawsin, Ph.D. As a clinical psychologists for the past 20 years I’ve worked with individuals affected by the big guns – cancer, death and dying. Through this work I witnessed the one key factor that motivates one to keep on living – relationships. Relationships are core to who we are and how we experience life.

Unfortunately, sometimes relationships aren’t easy and sex can suck

I have worked as a clinician and professor to support individuals and couples improve their relationships and sex life, in the context of major life stressors, like cancer.

There’s no shame in your game, you probably just need to polish off some rust and shine a little brighter to live the life you really want to live.  This is where I come in. Specializing in sex therapy, couples counseling, coping with major life transitions like cancer and aging-  I can help you realize your full potential and strengthen your relationships so that they lift you up, rather than bring you down.  When it comes to improving your sex life, there’s nothing I haven’t heard and nothing embarrasses me. I create a judgement-free space for clients to express and explore their sexuality in their own unique ways.

I believe that each of us embrace our sexuality in unique ways.  Boxes and categories often minimize the spectrum of sexuality that exists.  I not only welcome individuals and couples from all orientations and identities, but my research aims to reduce gaps in support for sexual minorities.  My team and I were the first to address psychosexual concerns amongst same-sex attracted cancer survivors and their partners, Rekindle, and we continue to build on this work.

Active | Energetic | Transparent | Not Judgey

I’m action-oriented in and out of the therapy room.  While I love to talk, I love to DO even more. We will build on your unique strengths to sharpen and learn new skills to cope more effectively. I have the most energy of anyone I know and bring this energy to each and every one of my sessions. I’m a straight shooter, fostering honesty and transparency to encourage you to find and use your unique voice.  While I can be fairly direct, I’m not at all judgey.  I have worked with clients all over the world from so many backgrounds, I feel like a UN Ambassador (which was my career back-up plan).  I embrace diversity and appreciate special ways each client shines. Being an academic, I practice what I preach and only use proven techniques in my work.

If you’re looking for a change, ready to choose a different path that embraces all of YOU, then we might be a great match!

So what are you like out of the therapy room?

I’m pretty much the same except typically on the water sailing or traveling to somewhere I can sail.  I’m not as formal as the bun and sunnies imply – at least I think I’m funny. I don’t keep my mouth shut, my head down, or my opinions to myself.  My family and friends are my island retreat and without them, I wouldn’t be able to do this work.
